Tips for staying happy and healthy this holiday season

The 2020 holiday season will bring more stress than ever for many of us. Maybe it’s financial hardship that’s putting a damper on the season, or the inability to travel and visit extended family. This year has been rough, and perhaps the holidays are starting to sound more like a chore than something to look forward to. As the season approaches, here are some of our tips for ways to make the most of the festive time of year.

1. Let go of perfection

It’s tempting to shoot for the moon during the holidays. Social media gives us lots of #inspiration for décor, gifts and meals that are sure to wow holiday guests. Sometimes all of these ideas can make you feel like you’re not doing enough—but give yourself a break. Remember that gatherings will be smaller than ever this year, which means less people to impress! If going all out is taking up time you could be spending with family, ditch the extravagance in favor of the quality time.

2. Stick to healthy eating habits

Maybe you’re usually SO good about packing your diet with veggies, protein and healthy fats…but when the holidays roll around, it’s a sweets and carbs free-for-all. Don’t get us wrong—we love comfort food, and we’d never suggest giving up all the delicious treats the holidays bring to the table. But we also know that too much not-so-healthy food can leave us feeling pretty icky, both physically and mentally. Balance is key. To keep up your festive mood, try some healthier swaps. Roasted veggies and cold weather fruits like apples, grapefruits and persimmons add freshness to the usual rotation of holiday snacks and treats. 3. Take time for yourself

The holidays are a time for family, but maybe you’re ready for a little social distance between you and your loved ones. You’re definitely not alone, so give yourself the break you deserve. Take a walk around the neighborhood or a drive to the grocery store (even if you don’t really need anything). Try not to skip the things that help you unwind—whether it’s working out, meditating or long hot showers in the mornings—in the name of your holiday plans. That way, when the season is over, you won’t have to rebuild your routine.

The holidays may look and feel a little different this year, but they’re always about the same thing: spending time with the ones we love and giving thanks for what we have.
